SO … alright let’s get to it!
I know the big hang up for a lot of Etsy sellers is just the simple “what the hell do i even sell?” and totally get it.
It’s overwhelming and exciting and then people get so lost in the rabbit hole that you know what actually ends up happening?
They have these awesome ideas and amazing motivation and they create something super cool, take time to create an Etsy shop, get all excited about the potential, make their first product, list it, and then….
They quit. They are like… oh wait nevermind I have no idea what I’m doing and stop.
They put up one listing and then never get back to it.
I’ve seen it time and time again… you know who you are.
It can be overwhelming. I totally get that. Reason why? The possibilities are ENDLESS.
And instead of that being overwhelming… it should be exciting. Like really freaking exciting!
Wanna know why?
Because that equals endless profit potential. Literally ENDLESS. There is no ceiling to how many products you can create or how many sales you can make. Tell me a salary job that can offer that.
I’ll wait.
So why do people get stuck in the overwhelm and quit?
Because they don’t have a strategy, direction, or true focus.
And of course they don’t! Starting an Etsy business can be simple but not if you have no clue what you are doing! So many people think, oh I can do that – and YES they can! But how successful can you be without any guidance or training? I mean… c’mon people – you know this already.
And here I am on a soap box… guess what I did? Yup. tried to figure it all out on my own, like “I can do this myself, I’ll figure it out”
If you read one of my previous posts of how long it really took for me to fail over and over again before I found success… you’ll know I’m truly telling you that I wish I had more guidance from the beginning, I would have hit my first 40K month a heck of a lot earlier than I did.
So while there is a multi-pronged strategy that goes into “what to sell and who to sell it to” I want to explain the 3 best types of digital products you can sell in your Etsy shop.
You can absolutely have a shop that is all of just one type of product, but I don’t recommend that. I recommend having a healthy mix of all 3 of these types… mostly of the first and second – the third can be a pain the ass, but it’s a necessary evil.
You want to be sure that your product line reaches the needs – like ALL the needs – of your perfect target customer. You don’t want them going elsewhere, the point of your Etsy shop is for YOU to make sales.
Ok so the first type of product you should have in your shop is evergreen products.
And you might be asking, “Cool, cool, yea totally but like what does that even mean?”
I was the same way when I started my online business – I heard people use the term “evergreen” all the time and I had no idea what it meant. I just nodded and secretly pulled my phone out.
I literally went to Google and was like “what does evergreen mean”
Evergreen items are products that sell well throughout the year. So these are products don’t rely on seasonal changes or fads or trends and are always in demand.
You can expect these products to make sales all throughout the year.
I would consider these to be the backbone and the solid foundation, old reliable.
Knowing that they can make you sales 24/7/365 with no worries.
Some examples of evergreen products could be – templates for planners, digital art prints, birthday invites, or educational resources that people might need regardless of the time of year
Next up is Seasonal products.
Now seasonal products are products that will really only sell at specific times of the year. These are great because they will give you BIG spikes during the particular season you are in… but once that time passes they will basically be sitting dormant in your shop.
There are also two different kinds of seasonal products you may want to think about including too. There is evergreen seasonal and true seasonal.
Now that we have the understanding of what evergreen is – an evergreen seasonal product are the ones that are relevant every year during the same season or occasion.
An example of an evergreen seasonal product would be something like Halloween or Christmas printable gift tags.
These are great because the maintenance on this product is super low, you know that when that season comes around, you are going to see a high spike in sales which is amazing. But like I said, when it’s over, you won’t see that spike for the following year. But you don’t really have to do anything for the listing… leave it be and let it pick up steam again the following year.
The other kind of seasonal product is a true seasonal product.
This one is tied to a particular event or occurrence that happens only once, like
using a specific year in the design.
So for example – 2024 New Years Eve or Year of The Dragon or Leap Year
You’ll see a high spike on these during that trending season… but once it’s over, you either need to update the product consistently or delete it because there is really no need for it after that season. The demand is minimal to nothing for the rest of the year – so this can cause a bit more work on your end.
And you can sell JUST seasonal products in your shop too. However, you will notice that the majority of products in your shop will lay dormant just waiting for their time to be purchased.
My recommendation is building a shop of both evergreen and seasonal products. This way, you see consistent sales throughout the year, but also consistent spikes throughout the year during specific seasons. This way, you are getting the best of both worlds.
Although this third and final one is a bit of a pain in the butt… I do recommend considering adding it in – remember… your shop isn’t about you – it’s about the customer. However, adding too many of these types of listings takes away the “passive” aspect of your shop.
This type of product is custom products.
When you are creating a custom product, it is no longer a set it and forget it type listing. When someone orders a custom listing, you actually have to MAKE or CREATE that specific listing.
Not sure if you have figured this out about me yet or not.. .but I’m what I like to call a Lazy entrepreneur. Work smarter not harder. So I don’t love custom because that means I actually have to do something extra.
That sounds really bad, but it’s true. I love passively making money and that is what evergreen and seasonal products do for me.
But… I do offer some custom at a MUCH higher price point, because listen, If I’m going to have to actually DO something – I’m going to get paid for it.
Examples of custom products could be Personalized digital illustrations, custom-designed invitation
And offering a custom type of listing or product in your shop is certainly smart because it shows the customer that you are willing to work with them, but I definitely do not recommend having a ton of these listings in your shop or else you’ll be moving farther away from the passive aspect of this business and if you are listening to this podcast – that’s not really what you are after.
Aright – so to recap… you should have a healthy mix of
- Evergreen
- Seasonal
- Custom
Products in your shop. If you have this – you are meeting all the needs of all of your potential customers throughout the year and allowing your Etsy shop to be as passive as possible so you can sit back and watch those sales roll in while you are most likely dealing with the other chaos happening in your life… not talking from experience or anything… who am I kidding, boy mom life is freaking bonkers.
OK love – that’s a wrap and I’ll catch you in the next post!
