SO … alright let’s get to it!
Ohhh social media. I’m not totally sure where you stand on it, and I would love to know… but for me – I have a love/hate with it. Especially from a business standpoint – and I’ll get to that in a minute.
I think when I look at social media from a personal standpoint, on my personal feed… it doesn’t actually bother me AS much – it’s where I see updates from friends and family – but its funny right, we use social media to “connect” but we don’t actually connect.
It can literally turn into my news source, where I go for inspiration, it validates my mood, my ideas, my opinions, it’s basically my search engine, checking up to see if people are legit, my cookbook, maybe go down some BravoTV rabbit holes…
Unfortunately what social media can lead to if we aren’t careful, is comparison, imposter syndrome, anxiety, stress, and increased sadness and isolation.
And I think we have all been there. In one way or another.
I don’t want to say that Social media is FAKE all the time, I think sometimes it is… maybe the word INFLATED? INCOMPLETE? I mean, let’s call it what it is, it’s a HIGHLIGHT REEL.
But the world tells us that we don’t really exist if we don’t have or post on social media.
And maybe you have even went to check out my social media to see if I was legit or not. Hate to break it to you – I will not be one of those Etsy Coaches that posts everyday, fills up my stories daily, or dances to trending audios, or creating video content and reels. It’s just not me. Not my jam and honestly, probably won’t ever be.
But – this is our world. Because we couldn’t possibly exist or let alone have a successful business without it right?
So – When it comes to online business, social media is basically a non-negotiable.
In order to have a successful online business you NEED social media.
And all the things we are supposed to do with it – show up posting everyday, post something relatable on your stories daily, sharing my kids and connecting about mom life, find the trending audios, practice the dance moves for hours, engage with potential followers, increase your follower and like count, and find the secret formula to content that converts, gets on the explore page, and beats the algorithm that literally changes every day.
At least… that’s what we are told. It isn’t the truth.
In one of my other posts, I went through my entire story of how I went from burnt out teacher to a Top 0.1% Etsy Seller with over 90,000 sales and finally living the life of freedom I only ever dreamed of.
But what I didn’t mention, is that all of that, all of that success was done WITHOUT social media.
Here’s what happened – when I started my digital product Etsy business, I started an Instagram account for it. Because that’s what we are told to do.
I was spinning my wheels every day coming up with content.
I hated it.
But – it was the necessary evil right?
I kept seeing “doesn’t matter how many followers, likes, or engagement you have, they are watching, they will buy from you, be consistent, don’t give up, this is the only way to be successful”
It was like the quote from one of my favorite movies “Field of Dreams” – If you build it, they will come.
So… I continued.
Then I got smart.
I went to my Etsy analytics and wanted to see where my audience was actually coming from.
At this point, I was about 9 months in, I had already seen amazing success in my shop, so I knew I was doing something right – maybe it was all that posting that only had 3 likes each- my mom, my husband, and my best friend.
And whadda ya know.
Literally NONE of my traffic was coming from social media.
NONE.
Zip. Nada.
Mindblown emoji.
So the whole build it and they will come…. I was basically building a baseball field for soccer players. They aren’t coming… no matter how beautiful that field is.
So, I said F it.
And focused on where they were actually coming from.
And that is when my success, my profits, my sales, skyrocketed.
Let’s back it up – if you were let’s say, looking for a 6 year old’s unicorn birthday party invitations and all the matching things that go with it – the cupcake toppers, the food signs, the favor bags, the signage, all the things.
Where are you going to find that? Let’s think like a shopper for a minute. Where are you going?
Are you going to Instagram for that?
I wouldn’t be.
I’d be going to Etsy. I’d be going to Pinterest. I’d be going to Google.
Not Instagram. Not TikTok. Not Facebook. Not LinkedIn.
So why are we wasting our time on platforms where people aren’t looking for your product?
When I realized my traffic wasn’t coming from social media. I immediately got off. My last post for my shop’s Instagram was in April 2021. It had absolutely ZERO to do with my multiple 6-figures in profit.
Don’t waste time on platforms that you are just spinning your wheels on.
And listen – if social media is your jam and that is something that totally lights you up – GO FOR IT!
For me, it was something that I didn’t enjoy, didn’t love the follower or likes chase, didn’t love the imposter syndrome that came with it, didn’t love being glued to my phone, didn’t love asking my husband or friends to take “candid” videos of me to use for B-rolls, didn’t love the pushiness of social media sales, or keeping up with the trends that the social media gurus told you work… my goodness i’m literally exhausted just thinking about it.
My life became so FREE from never posting on social media – and I still had massive success.
It’s because I focused on strategies that actually worked. Now – I’m not saying that this can work for any online business. There are many that NEED social media. Selling digital products on Etsy is NOT one of them.
And thats why i loved it because it was aligning with my values and what I wanted to spend my time on. It allowed me to free up my time to be more present with my kids and do the things I actually like doing. It’s also why you don’t see me on social media that often now with this business being an Etsy coach.
Honestly – one day, I think I might just throw the towel in all together because it’s not worth it for me. But I am noticing that it is a way that you are able to contact me easily and for that, I enjoy that aspect.
And another reason why I hate it… all that success I had OFF of social media – the over 90,000 sales… guess what happens to me when I get on social media?
I see other “Etsy Coaches” that talk about how they have 10,000 sales in their shop and they have 60 thousand followers eating up everything they have to say.
And then MY imposter syndrome reels it’s ugly head and I think that I’m not good enough.
What the F is that about??? Even I have to remind myself of who I am and what I have accomplished. Social media is fake-ish, inflated, and incomplete. It’s a highlight reel – and some people know how to leverage it to make it seem as if they are more successful than they are.
And kudos to them – that’s one thing I can’t do. Social media.
But what I can do? Is sell digital products on Etsy.
I have created a strategy to leverage the places where customers actually are and I use ALL of my energy to focus on growing that. And it works.
